The Afeemi Story: Why I Started Making Clothes for Women Who Just Want to Feel Like Themselves

Hi, I'm Simran.

Before Afeemi was a website, it was a pile of fabric on my bedroom floor, a sketchbook full of scratched-out designs, and a very stubborn belief that Indian wear didn't have to choose between "traditional" and "comfortable."

I grew up watching the women in my family get dressed for every occasion in kurtas and suit sets that looked stunning in photos and felt like punishment by hour three. Stiff necklines. Fabric that didn't breathe. Fits that were either too loose to feel put-together or too tight to actually move in. Somewhere along the way, we'd all just quietly accepted that looking good and feeling good were two different things, and you had to pick one.

I didn't want to pick.

So I started designing pieces I actually wanted to wear — to work, to a wedding, to absolutely nothing in particular. Kurtas with dhoti pants that let you sit cross-legged on the floor at a family gathering without a second thought. Suit sets with dupattas that felt festive without needing an occasion to justify them. Fabrics chosen because they felt good against skin, not just because they photographed well.

I called it Afeemi — because the closest translation of what I wanted people to feel wearing it was that: a little intoxicating, a little addictive, the kind of comfort you don't want to take off at the end of the day. And I built it around one simple idea, which is still printed on our tagline today — Wear Anywhere. Not "occasion wear." Not "festive edit." Just clothes that move with your actual life.

Every single piece we make is handmade and made to order. That's not a marketing line — it means when you order from us, someone is actually cutting and stitching your kurta, not pulling it off a shelf of a thousand identical ones. It takes a little longer to reach you because of that, and I think that's a fair trade for something made with actual hands and actual care, not a factory line racing toward a deadline.

We're still small. Still based out of one office in Thane, still personally reading your WhatsApp messages and Instagram DMs, still figuring things out as we grow. But every product photo on this site, every review, every "founder's favourite" tag — that's real. Those are pieces I've actually worn, in outfits I've actually rewatched myself in on my phone camera before leaving the house, because I liked how they made me feel.

If you're here because a kurta caught your eye, or because you're tired of clothes that ask you to sit up straighter and breathe shallower — I made this for you. Come wear it anywhere you actually go.

With love,

Simran
